Description

Module 1: Sexual Abuse Treatment

 

Participants will:

  • Clarify the types of sexual abuse and communicate the levels of severity.
  • Recognize the prevalence of sexual abuse in our culture and articulate the mental health symptoms (parts) that emerge from sexual victimization.
  • Clarify what Internal Family Systems therapy offers that other treatment modalities do not.
  • Describe the steps of IFS sexual abuse treatment and consider that effectiveness of IFS and a reduction of symptoms (healing of parts).

Module 2: Case Study of Sexual Abuse Treatment

 

Participants will 

  • Summarize how developmental history can enhance case conceptualization and effective use of the IFS model.
  • Differentiate common polarities in clients who have been victimized sexually and discover how IFS works with these polarities.
  • Describe the severity of protectors in complex trauma cases and implement IFS treatment interventions for softening the protectors and therefore improving symptomology.
  • Implement the Internal Family Systems steps of healings to make lasting change for exiles who have been burdened from sexual trauma.

 

Module 3: IFS Sexual Perpetrator Treatment

  • Demonstrate the role of perpetrator parts in the system, discriminate how they differ from managers and firefighters, and utilize the Internal Family Systems model to treat them.
  • Extrapolate how working with Self leadership toward sexually acting out parts is similar to working with any protector in the system and will reduce the sexually acting out behaviors.
  • Discriminate how IFS treatment differs from traditional sexual offender treatment and recognize that perpetrator parts are protecting young, vulnerable exiles.
  • Clarify the steps of working with sexually acting out parts using the Internal Family Systems model and explain how this will impact the protectors and heal the vulnerability underneath. 

Module 4: Case Studies IFS Treatment of Sexually Acting Out Parts

  • Integrate the role of legacy burden of sexually acting out parts and implement ways to treat legacy burdens.
  • Summarize how developmental and sexual history can enhance case conceptualization and effective use of the IFS model.
  • Assess how polarized parts maintain the sexually acting out behaviors and specify how inner critics play a role in sustaining the behavior.
  • Consider the pain of exiles sand how the sexually acting out parts are protecting them.

IFS Institute


Richard Schwartz began his career as a systemic family therapist and an academic and he is now on the Faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Meadows treatment center in Arizona. Grounded in systems thinking, Dr. Schwartz developed the Internal Family Systems model (IFS) model in response to clients’ descriptions of various parts within themselves. In 2000, he founded the Center for Self Leadership (www.selfleadership.org), which offers three levels of trainings and workshops in IFS for professionals and the general public, both in this country and abroad. A featured speaker for national professional organizations, Dr. Schwartz has published many books and over fifty articles about IFS.

Dr. Wonder is a psychologist in private practice in Tallahassee, Florida who has over 15 years experience with Internal Family Systems. She is a co-lead trainer for the Center for Self-Leadership and a Senior Faculty for Intimacy From the Inside Out. Dr. Wonder offers consultation to therapists learning the IFS and IFIO models. She has worked with sexual abuse treatment her entire career, including with individuals who have experienced sexual trauma as well as those who have parts that have sexually acted out. Dr. Wonder also published a case study of an individual who had a pornography addiction. She finds the IFS model to be a powerful intervention for both victims and perpetrators.
